SILENCED

An article from Relevant Magazine about taboo topics in the church inspired this illustration. I was touched by the author's story about how she and her husband were not allowed to speak about their struggles in a "culture of church taboos." (It's a very interesting read!) When people feel silenced by the church it can be even more painful than the hurt caused by any other individual or organization. The church is (thankfully) often the first place hurting people turn, but when the instinct to push away the hard stuff sets in, we can do more harm than good.

I thoroughly enjoyed creating this piece and experimenting with a new illustration style. It has come to life for me in many ways and expanded in meaning the longer it lives.
